Have you ever had some well-meaning friend say to you about your addiction,“That’s wrong. It’s sin. Stop doing it”? Or maybe they have said, “Can’t you see that what you are doing is destroying everything in your life that is good?”Most people in addiction seem to believe they are locked into their old patterns of behaviour because of their genetic makeup, family background and environment. In short, they believe they are victims of their PAST and circumstance. If we believe that we are victims of our past, it really won’t make any difference what we do to try to get free. We always act consistently with how we perceive ourselves. Our behaviour is a result of what we believe about, God and the world we live in. It won’t help or matter if you work a programme perfectly. If you do not change the way you think and believe, you will fail. Many have worked the programmes the best they could and left with high hopes, yet ended up falling back into their addictive behaviour in a matter of days, weeks of months. Why? All they changed was their behaviour for a few months. The old belief system that had them locked into addiction was still intact. What about you? Who are you? Are you a product of your family environment, your genetic make up or fracturing experiences of life?
